Press Release Denouncing the Violent Action Against Peaceful Demonstrators in Mekelle, Tigray on September 7, 2023.
ATAD-America condemns the violent attack on peaceful protestors in Mekelle, Tigray which occurred on September 7, 2023. We express our deepest concern for the safety and well-being of the innocent civilians, journalists and political leaders who were exercising their fundamental right to assemble and voice their grievances. The attack, reportedly carried out by police forces of the Tigray region, resulted in casualties, injuries, or property damage. Such actions against peaceful protestors are inexcusable and a clear violation of human rights.
ATAD-America strongly denounces the recent reports of violent action and arbitrary arrest of peaceful protesters, members of the media and leaders of opposition parties in Mekelle, Tigray. The action by the police forces is contrary to the fundamental principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law that the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) has signed to protect and uphold. Such undemocratic actions, unless addressed timely, are going to undermine the efforts of those who are working hard to bring sustainable peace and justice to the people of Tigray.
It is very unfortunate that violence and intimidation are used to stop peaceful demonstrations by the security forces of TIRA, which has been established to protect fundamental democratic and human rights of the people of Tigray. Unless addressed immediately, these actions will play a negative role in the efforts of all friends of the people of Tigray who are working hard to extend the mandate of ICHREE and to guarantee accountability and justice to the atrocities committed during the genocidal war of Tigray in the last three years. Thus, ATAD-America calls upon:
- TIRA to take action for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals who have been arbitrarily arrested for participating in peaceful protests.
- TIRA to conduct an independent investigation into the use of excessive force by TIRA security forces in order to bring those responsible to be held accountable for their actions. We also call for the investigation of the mis-characterization of the events that unfolded on September 7, 2023 by the head of the Mekelle Police forces on September 8, 2023.
- All political forces to engage in a constructive and inclusive dialogue to address those that are disenfranchised by the ongoing political and economic challenges and performance of the TIRA.
- Some diaspora groups to avoid exploiting the situation for their own agenda and to avoid statements that could derail the peace process and elongate the suffering of our people.
ATAD-America calls for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident, urging the relevant authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. We also call upon all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law. The people of Tigray have endured immense suffering, and it is imperative that all parties commit to dialogue to ensure the safety and well-being of the region’s residents.
ATAD-America remains committed to advocating for peace, justice, and the protection of human rights in Tigray and around the world. ATAD-America will continue closely monitoring the situation in Tigray and would like to express its readiness to support the efforts that promote justice and peace in the region.
With Best Regards,
ATAD-America
