{"id":15416,"date":"2024-03-20T20:28:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T20:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/?p=15416"},"modified":"2024-03-20T20:28:40","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T20:28:40","slug":"public-statement-to-the-68th-commission-on-the-status-of-women-csw68","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/?p=15416","title":{"rendered":"Public Statement to the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2550\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/letter-head.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/letter-head.png 2550w, https:\/\/axumawian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/letter-head-600x125.png 600w, https:\/\/axumawian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/letter-head-1536x320.png 1536w, https:\/\/axumawian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/letter-head-2048x427.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2550px) 100vw, 2550px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Public Statement to the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Concerns:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We address the 68th Commission on the Status of Women with grave concerns regarding the ongoing genocide&#8217;s devastating impact on Tigrayan women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conflict-related sexual violence has been used as a weapon against women in Tigray as documented by&nbsp; various human right organizations, independent media, and ICHREE&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These atrocity crimes are still going on by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Eritrean and Amhara forces in the illegally and forcefully occupied areas in Tigray (about 40% of Tigray\u2019s territory) and include:<ul><li>Mutilation of women\u2019s genitals and other body parts;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Insertion of foreign objects into women\u2019s genitals;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Gang-rape of individual women, usually by 3 to 10 armed combatants;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Forcing of family members to witness or participate in the act;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Exposure of survivors to multiple incidents of rape, including sexual slavery, with survivors typically held for two to 35 days;<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intentionally infecting women with HIV\/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases through rape to reduce the number of the Tigrayan (Tigrian) population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are acts that inflict severe physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences on survivors and their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Demands<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While CSW68 focuses on institutional strengthening and economic empowerment, we urge the Commission, in line with Julia Duncan-Cassell, Former Liberian Minister of Gender and President of the Brussels-based European External Programme with Africa (EPA) and respected co signatories, to include this issue on the agenda for the 68th CSW to ensure sustained global attention<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We specifically call on the 68th CSW to do this by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calling for Urgent Actions: specifically address the situation of women in Tigray who have suffered and continue to suffer weaponized&nbsp; Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) and call for immediate measures to end the horrific situations&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demanding&nbsp; actions to protect women from the ongoing and future&nbsp; atrocity crimes&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emphasizing\u00a0 and advocating the need for programs that:<ul><li>Ensure psychological support for victims of CRSV in Tigray.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Address issues of stigmatization and economic exclusion that the survivors are facing.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Promote gender-sensitive economic opportunities.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Call for the accountability of perpetrators, including military and political leaders to fight impunity.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advocating for the inclusion of Tigrayan women&#8217;s voices and perspectives in all peacebuilding efforts. Their participation is crucial for achieving lasting peace and ensuring the safety and well-being of Tigrayan women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tigrayan women, specifically victims of atrocity crimes, require your attention for an immediate and decisive action.
