The Committee to Protect Journalists on Monday condemned Ethiopia\u2019s expulsion<\/a> of Economist <\/em>correspondent Tom Gardner, following the revocation of his press accreditation on Friday, May 13. Gardner\u2019s expulsion came almost a year after Ethiopian authorities similarly expelled New York Times<\/em> reporter Simon Marks <\/a>and within the context<\/a> of a deteriorating press freedom climate<\/a> in which authorities have arbitrarily arrested numerous members of the press amid the ongoing civil war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen international journalists are expelled while local members of the press face the threat of arrest, the message is clear: Ethiopian authorities will not tolerate critical journalism or dissenting opinions,\u201d said CPJ sub-Saharan Africa representative Muthoki Mumo. \u201cEthiopian officials should rescind the expulsion of\u00a0Economist\u00a0correspondent Tom Gardner and create an environment where both international and local press feel safe reporting even on the most sensitive of subjects.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ethiopian Media Authority, a statutory regulator, issued a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0on Friday saying that it had revoked Gardner\u2019s credentials because he \u201cfailed to live to [the] standards of conduct for journalists.\u201d The authority indicated it was willing to grant a license to another correspondent from the publication. In a statement\u00a0published on Monday<\/a>,\u00a0The Economist\u00a0said that authorities subsequently gave Gardner \u201c48 hours to leave the country,\u201d alleging \u201cunspecified\u201d ethical breaches. In March, the authority issued a\u00a0public warning<\/a>\u00a0to Gardner, accusing him of tweeting information that was not \u201cproperly sourced or supported by appropriate authorities.\u201d In its statement,\u00a0The Economist\u00a0said Gardner\u2019s reporting on Ethiopia \u201chas been professional, unbiased and often courageous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
