{"id":14162,"date":"2022-04-21T14:11:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T14:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/?p=14162"},"modified":"2022-04-22T14:14:33","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T14:14:33","slug":"hundreds-of-children-under-five-die-of-hunger-in-ethiopias-tigray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/axumawian.com\/?p=14162","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of children under five die of hunger in Ethiopia&#8217;s Tigray"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>While the deaths from malnutrition \u2014 recorded between June last year and April 1 \u2014 are close to 2,000, the number is likely higher as most hunger deaths go unrecorded.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/africa\/hundreds-of-children-under-five-die-of-hunger-in-ethiopia-s-tigray-56521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TRT World<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 1,900 children under 5 have died from malnutrition in Ethiopia\u2019s embattled Tigray region in the past year according to a study conducted by regional health officials and seen by The Associated Press news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true number of child deaths from malnutrition is likely higher as most families are unable to bring their children to health centres because of transportation challenges, said a doctor involved in the study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause we cannot access most areas, we do not know what is happening on the community level,\u201d said the doctor, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are simply the deaths we have managed to record in health facilities,\u201d as most hunger deaths go unrecorded, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deaths were recorded at health facilities across Tigray between June last year and April 1. Western Tigray, which is under the control of forces from the neighbouring Amhara region, was not included in the survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ethiopian govt and Tigray rebels agree to a humanitarian truce\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-znVq7UNgNI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Humanitarian truce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tigray has been cut off from the rest of Ethiopia since June when rebels from the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/africa\/ethiopia-blames-tplf-for-afar-region-massacres-300-000-displacements-54552\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TPLF<\/a>), a group outlawed by Ethiopian authorities, recaptured most of the region as federal forces withdrew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Banking services, phone lines and road links are all down in the region, a situation the United Nations has said amounts to a \u201cde facto blockade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethiopian authorities insist there is no deliberate effort to target Tigrayan civilians.
