If you were to pick a person randomly and ask the person to list the contrasts and similarities between Tigray and Ukraine, he or she would list a plethora of differences but would be highly unlikely the person would list the different international community\u2019s responses they both have gotten thus far when both are victims of aggression by two thugs and maniacs\u2014Abiy and Putin. The bias is not a subtle or human condition or human element but a social construct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outright racism! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is even ironic is that Tigray is the home of the Battle of Adwa where the then firmly established scientific dogma is otherwise known as \u201cEugenics\u201d was shattered so much so that the world was stunned whenTegaru defeated the invading Italians beyond words<\/a>\u00a0when it was a forgone conclusion for Italy to come out a victor for the science had said so. Tigray proved science wrong! Tigray said all men and women were created equal and are judged by their character and merit but sadly the world opted to be callous and indifferent including in the here and now\u2014the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tigray became a victim of aggression including war crimes and genocide, the international community churned out its \u201cconcerns\u201d which later on graduated onto \u201cvery concerned\u201d and \u201cgravely concerned\u201d with no substantial effects on the aggressor whatsoever when the rape of over one hundred thousand Tigrean women went on unabated throughout Tigray. The numbers are horrifying and the response from the international community should\u2019ve been effective and swift but for a reason based on the social construct, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tigray, however, refused to resign into self-pity but remained true to what it is\u2014a resilient nation that strives in extraordinary adversity. Ethiopian huge army, Eritrean huge army, Amhara special forces, Somali mercenaries including high tech war technologies couldn\u2019t break Tigrayn spirit, instead, they all were defeated with their tails between their legs when it was crystal clear for Tigray that waiting for the international community to act was tantamount to chasing a wind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been sixteen months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the only weapon Abiy is left with is starving Tigray to death and in the meantime, the world remains indifferent for a reason which has become too obvious by now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tigray will survive as it always has and will rise from the ashes as the proverbial Sphinx and one can only hope that the international community recognizes and remains true to its founding credo where all men and women are created equal and should be seen as such anywhere and everywhere where Aristotle\u2019s lament should lose its meaning when he said, \u201cThe strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background of the war-of-annihilation on Tigray:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The war began in November 2020 when Ethiopia\u2019s army, backed by Eritrean and Somalia national armies and troops from Ethiopian regional states, moved to oust a TPLF-led regional government in Tigray after a long-standing political hostilities between Abiy\u2019s ruling party and the TPLF. The other dimension of the war was a genocidal campaign that has been brewing by elites from Amhara and Eritrean government. The trio combined their forces to unleash the November 2020 \u2018war-of-annihilation\u2019 on Tigrayans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more than 16-month-old war was marked by extreme brutality, including the use of rape and hunger as weapons of war, massacres and ethnic cleansing<\/a> against Tigrayans. As a result, the conflict has left thousands dead and forced many others to flee their homes with hundreds of thousands driven to the brink of starvation, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since June, Tigray has been put under a total humanitarian blockade by the Ethiopian government, with only less than 10 %<\/a>of the needed essential aid allowed to enter the region and no aid reached the region since December 15, 2021<\/a>. This has resulted in man-made famine to more than 900,000 people in the region and more than 5400<\/a> deaths as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Health Organization last month called for \u201cunfettered access<\/a>\u201d into war-wracked Tigray, saying its first delivery of life-saving medical supplies since July last year had stalled due to lack of fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 40 percent<\/a>of people in Tigray, a region of six million people, face \u201can extreme lack of food\u201d, the UN<\/a> said last month. The dire assessment published by the World Food Programme (WFP) came as humanitarian groups increasingly curtail activities because of fuel and supply shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 9.4 million people in northern Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.  Millions more are also suffering from severe food shortages, acute malnutrition is rising, disease and chronic illnesses are going untreated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
