This morning, Mulisa Abdissa, the federal police crime investigation unit deputy bureau head,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/amharic\/news-58785801\">told the BBC Amharic<\/a>\u00a0that Tesfalem was in police custody under investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tesfalem Waldyes, a renowned journalist and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ethiopiainsider?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EthiopiaInsider<\/a>, is missing starting from yesterday. His colleagues and friends couldn&#39;t find him after he reported the Irreechaa festival in Addis Ababa. He was last seen at the Irreecha Hora Finfinnee Festival in Addis Abeba where he posted a video of Oromo youth demanding the release of Oromo prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A family member of Tesfalem<em>&nbsp;told Addis Standard<\/em>&nbsp;that she heard the news on social media just like everyone else. \u201cI have no knowledge of his whereabouts or what has happened to him,\u201d&nbsp;the family member who spoke on conditions anonymity said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is currently at the federal Police investigation bureau detention center located in the Mexico area,\u201d Mulisa said. \u201cNothing will happen. We are investigating. There is nothing to worry about.\u201d But he declined to give details of what Tesfalem was detained for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video shared on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/8qvKZEB4_R\/\">Ethiopia Insider\u2019s Facebook page\u00a0<\/a>showing the protest that broke out during the Irreecha celebrations in Addis Abeba on Saturday went viral with more than 22, 000 likes and more than 6,000 shares. The BBC Amharic stated that it\u00a0has learned from reliable sources that security forces have searched Tesfalem\u2019s houses after they had detained him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Tesfalem was first arrested on April 2014 when he was working as member of Addis Standard newsroom, and was subsequently charged with terrorism along with five others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hamis Awel, a colleague of Tesfalem at Ethiopia Insider, is quoted as saying Tesfalem was planning to cover the Irreecha festival on Sunday, October 03, in Bishoftu city of Oromia state. Hamis said he failed to reach him by phone after he shared the video and photos of the holiday on Saturday after 8 AM local time. \u201cTesfalem has been in the area since early morning to cover the Irreecha celebrations in Addis Abeba,\u201d Hamis said, adding that he had repeatedly tried to contact him by phone and text message but failed to know his whereabouts until Monday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesfalem is a well known independent journalist who has previously worked for the weekly English and Amharic newspapers,&nbsp;<em>Addis Fortune<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Addis Neger<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was arrested in April 2014 when he was working as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/addisstandard.com\/analysis-maekelawi-ethiopia-still-running-torture-chamber-past\/\">member of Addis Standard newsroom<\/a>, and was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/addisstandard.com\/ethiopia-formally-charges-bloggers-journalists-with-terrorism-as-confusion-surrounds-the-process\/\">subsequently charged with terrorism<\/a>&nbsp;along with five others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After he was set free by a federal court more than two years later, Tesfalem went to exile to Germany where he worked for the Deutsche Welle Amharic department.
